Aging and Dignity

The promotion of human dignity is an ongoing challenge throughout the life cycle, following the route individual and ensuring full inclusion of every citizen.

It is a challenge that presents greater difficulties when talking about potentially more vulnerable populations, such as older people.

Not that age brings, automatically, plus a weakness, but the physical addiction, psychological and economic, which sometimes emerge in the advanced stages of life, can cause a loss of social power.

Despite the principles of the United Nations explicitly enshrine the law as an essential dignity of the elderly and the production of national law and international prolifera be to safeguard their rights, the fact is that Portugal is not always easy to ensure the promotion of the dignity this population group.

Many older people remain independent until later ages, playing influential roles, leading associative movements, marking the life of his family, but the growing number of people with disability and dependence, raises new questions and complex challenges.

Ensure the autonomy, self-determination, independence, security and access to care, are conditions for a dignified life, which still lacking a significant number of elderly, often manipulated, exploited financially, with difficulty in obtaining wave in equipment and social services network and without family support.

Fight for dignity of an elderly person requires an individual and collective effort, the involvement of civil society and a profound reinvention of the state, to carry out its core tasks.
Five integrated strategies can help:

Sow engaged in life, reinventing the concept of family and investing in a safe redoubt from-aid;

Planning your own aging, focusing on complementary social protection and active participation in;

Focusing on training and dignity of professionals working in the field of geriatric and gerontological intervention;

Adapting the law of the family, the inability of the supply and the laws of succession to new family dynamics, promoting the safeguarding of assets and prevention of financial exploitation;

Develop the social responses, under the aegis of the quality and respect for the rights of customers.

The defense of human dignity throughout their lives and, with special emphasis on age, is a crusade that never ceases and that concerns us all, requiring us awareness, involvement and a proactive approach to information and claiming responsibility.
